The Trials of Aerlynn
A downloadable game for Windows
The Trials of Aerlynn is a 2D platformer Metroidvania created in Unreal Engine 5.4 as a test of understanding the genre and creating simple but fun mechanics.
Originally I was given a template to create a Metroidvania, but I found the foundation to be flimsy and the basic mechanics were just scripted in very strange ways, like the slide teleporting the player forward over X time and stopping if it hits something. It was completely ignoring things like gravity or tile height. I wanted physics to matter, so I wound up rescripting the character controller entirely using blueprints. I also edited sprites I downloaded online, edited music on Audacity to loop, and created certain sprites based on the style of already existing ones (like the Pyres and the spellcasting in air animations).
You can check out the full blueprint here (revised 11/5, ver 1.4): https://blueprintue.com/blueprint/xkea5dkg/
